Annual Report 2024:
Positive Coaching Alliance
Year in Review
WHO WE ARE
PCA’s vision is to build a world where every child benefits from a positive youth sports experience with a coach who inspires them to become the best version of themselves in the game and in life.
WHAT WE DO
We train coaches and partner with youth sports organizations, parents, sports leaders, and communities to make youth sports more positive, equitable, and accessible to all kids regardless of social or economic circumstances.
WHY IT MATTERS
The research is clear that youth sports participation contributes to an array of positive outcomes for youth. With a dramatic increase in young people suffering from mental, emotional, and physical health issues as well as pandemic-related learning loss, social isolation, depression, and even suicide, kids need positive and supportive environments with caring, consistent adults now more than ever.

Letter from PCA Executive Team
PCA's vision is a world where every young person has access to the transformative benefits of a positive youth sports experience with a coach who inspires them to become their best selves in the game and in life.
Every day, PCA is inspired by the work of our over 800 partners across the country—youth sports organizations, schools and school districts, community organizations, parks and recreation departments, and national governing bodies—toward that shared vision.
Our growing alliance of local and national partners, National Advisory Board, National Board of Directors, National Leadership Council, Local Boards, and generous funders are as passionate as we are about harnessing the power of youth sports to help kids thrive, believe in themselves, and fulfill their aspirations.
PCA is two years into our five-year plan to provide seven million kids with a coach trained in positive youth development; ensuring that half of these come from under-resourced communities. Thanks to our partners and supporters, we have already impacted over two million kids and created more than 50,000 new youth sports opportunities for children who have historically been left on the sidelines.
Sport unites people across differences and builds stronger, more resilient communities. In these times when the world seems more divided than ever, it's critical that we provide our young people with much needed support and create lasting impact that fuels their learning and growth and inspires them to pursue their dreams on and off the field.
None of this would be possible without supporters like you. Thank you for making it possible for PCA to provide coaches, youth sports organizations, and communities the resources they need to make youth sports more positive, equitable, and accessible and to level the playing field for kids without access to sports.

Equity in Youth Sports Access and Participation
PCA's Sports Equity Initiative seeks to unlock the transformative power of sports by eliminating the barriers to participation faced by kids in under-resourced and marginalized communities across the country, ensuring that EVERY child has access to a positive youth sports experience.
-
PCA’s Community Roundtable Program brings together diverse groups of local stakeholders to collaborate, share resources, and develop strategies for increasing solutions to increase youth sports participation and enables PCA to better understand the specific access challenges facing each community and ensure our interventions have the greatest impact.
-
PCA’s Coach Recruitment Program aims to partner with local stakeholders to recruit volunteer coaches from within neighborhoods where they live, creating a more localized network of volunteers.
-
PCA’s Sports Equity Agendas address systemic inequities that have historically marginalized youth in disinvested communities, limiting their access to quality sports opportunities.
Why Equity Matters & And How Are The Children?
Check out these timely and powerful blog posts from PCA’s Chief Community Impact Officer Rob Marcus on Why Equity Matters.
"
" CHAMPIONING EQUITY MEANS ENSURING EQUAL ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL YOUNG ATHLETES, SO ALL COMMUNITIES HAVE THE CAPACITY TO CREATE POSITIVE AND EMPOWERING YOUTH SPORTS EXPERIENCES. "
Spotlight on Emerging Cities:
Expanding Sports Equity in Boston, MA, Austin, TX, and Buffalo, NY
The disparities in access to youth sports represent a significant challenge in our society. Children from marginalized communities face substantial barriers to participating in organized sports compared to their more affluent peers. Through our Sports Equity Programs, PCA is committed to ending this national problem by unlocking access to youth sports for children who would otherwise miss out due to financial limitations, gender, or other marginalized statuses. As part of our mission to promote positive and equitable sports opportunities for all, PCA expanded its programming to three additional cities: Buffalo, NY, Boston, MA, and Austin, TX. Each city presents unique challenges and opportunities as we work with local stakeholders, organizations, and volunteers to dismantle barriers to youth sports participation. Through our interventions PCA is making youth sports accessible by tailoring its efforts to each city’s needs.
TACKLING BARRIERS IN BOSTON: A FOCUS ON COLLABORATION AND CULTURAL PROFICIENCY
In Boston, PCA launched its Community Roundtable Program, designed to bring together diverse groups of local stakeholders to develop strategies for increasing youth sports participation and enablePCA to better understand the specific access challenges facing each community, and ensure our interventions have the greatest impact. Key partners such as Boston Scores, The Base, and Sportsmen Tennis Center played pivotal roles in these discussions, which have become a platform for youth sports organizations (YSOs) to tackle shared challenges.
-
Through these roundtable discussions, PCA helped organizations identify systemic barriers and strengthen their programs by sharing best practices.
-
A significant barrier identified in these discussions was a shortage of volunteer coaches, which limits the capacity of local YSOs to serve the community effectively. To address this, PCA expanded its Coach Recruitment Program and successfully recruited and referred 50 volunteers to local YSO. PCA also collaborated with the Mayor’s Office to support volunteer coach recruitment, with the city featuring PCA’s volunteer coach application on its website.
-
By placing coaches in accessible areas, PCA not only increases the number of available volunteers but also ensures that these coaches reflect the communities they serve.
AUSTIN: ADDRESSING STRUCTURAL BARRIERS TO SPORTS ACCESS
In Austin, TX, PCA worked closely with the City of Austin to address structural barriers that limit access to sports facilities, limiting participation among youth from underserved communities. Austin’s existing system for managing access to public sports fields disproportionately impacted YSOs in underserved communities.
-
To address these challenges in Austin, PCA facilitated a series of community roundtables, bringing together city officials and local youth sports leaders to explore ways to improve field accessibility and ensure equitable access to sports facilities.
-
These discussions were instrumental in gathering community input and identifying specific barriers that prevent youth from participating in sports.
-
As a result, PCA has collaborated with the city to develop recommendations for improving facility access and has advocated for policy changes to make sports fields more accessible to all YSOs, regardless of their financial resources.
We are excited to report the impact of this initiative later this year, as we continue working to ensure that Austin’s sports infrastructure supports equitable access for all youth.
BUFFALO: CO-CREATING A COMMUNITY-DRIVEN SPORTS EQUITY AGENDA
In Buffalo, NY, PCA adopted a comprehensive, community-driven approach to develop a Sports Equity Agenda in partnership with local leaders, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, and Project Play WNY.
-
PCA worked with local stakeholders, facilitating a monthly youth sports task force to helpBuffalo’s local leaders develop strategies to tackle the root causes of sports inequity. This collaborative and inclusive process ensures that all voices are heard, and the solutions are co-created by the community.
-
Through this work, PCA expects to see meaningful increases in youth sports participation in Buffalo.
-
We look forward to sharing the impact of this initiative with our network later this year, as we continue to work toward long-term, community-defined solutions.
PCA’s work in Boston, Austin, and Buffalo reflects our broader commitment to closing the Sports Equity Gap and creating a youth sports ecosystem where all children have the opportunity to succeed. By focusing on community engagement, coach recruitment, cultural proficiency, and systemic change, PCA is driving meaningful progress in each city, tailoring our approach to meet the unique needs of local communities. These efforts not only increase access to sports for marginalized youth but also create a foundation for long-term, sustainable change that will benefit future generations. Through collaboration with local stakeholders and a shared commitment to equity, PCA is helping to build a more inclusive and accessible youth sports landscape in Boston, Austin, Buffalo, and beyond.
Advancing Sports Equity:
PCA’s Coach Symposiums
As part of our transformative Sports Equity Initiative, PCA introduced the Coach Symposium and Recruitment Fair, a new nationwide program aimed at empowering coaches and promoting equity in youth sports through directly addressing systemic challenges such as the shortage of qualified coaches, significant disparities in sports participation among underserved youth, and the absence of uniform training standards—all of which disproportionally impact underrepresented communities. The symposium’s goal is to bridge these gaps by equipping volunteer coaches with the skills and resources to foster inclusive, equitable, and supportive sports environments. The first events, held last year in Oakland, CA, and Boston, MA, set the stage for a bold and impactful initiative that PCA plans to expand across the country.
-
Free and open to all, the symposiums bring together diverse groups of coaches, parents, sports providers, and youth-serving volunteers. Attendees engage in expert-led workshops, thought-provoking panel discussions, and hands-on recruitment opportunities, ensuring that every participant leaves with actionable insights to advance equity and positivity in youth sports.
-
A key feature of these events is the involvement of industry leaders and professional athletes, who join panel discussions to share best practices for addressing barriers to participation, creating inclusive team cultures, and coaching with empathy. These conversations emphasize the role of coaches as change-makers, capable of shaping sports as a vehicle for positive youth development and social equity.
-
Another critical element of this initiative is its role as a recruitment hub, connecting new and aspiring coaches with sports organizations eager to welcome trained, enthusiastic volunteers. By focusing on recruitment in underserved areas, PCA is fostering a coaching community that reflects the diversity of the youth it serves and ensuring that all young athletes have access to opportunities for growth through sports.
This initiative is poised to make a lasting impact as it expands to communities nationwide. By continuing to prioritize equity and opportunity in its programs, PCA is advancing its vision of stronger, healthier communities—one coach, one team, and one athlete at a time.

TRAINER SPOTLIGHT:
HIRO RODRIUEZ
Inspiring the Next Generation
Through Youth Sports Coaching
For Hiro Rodriguez, coaching youth sports is about more than teaching the rules of the game. It’s a chance to shape young minds and inspire personal growth. His journey began when he volunteered as an assistant coach for his son’s t-ball team. Hiro saw an opportunity to create a positive environment where children could learn not only the fundamentals of the sport but also valuable life lessons like perseverance, teamwork, and resilience.
Incorporating principles from Positive Coaching Alliance, Hiro focuses on the "ELM Tree of Mastery," which stands for effort, learning, and mistakes being okay. He emphasizes that making mistakes is part of learning and encourages his players to embrace this mindset. His approach has fostered a team culture that values personal growth over perfection, earning him appreciation from both parents and players.
Hiro’s passion for coaching is rooted in his own experience with his youth football coach, Coach Pruitt, who was more than just a coach—he was a mentor and a role model. Coach Pruitt taught Hiro about setting goals, playing with pride, and staying resilient, lessons that have stuck with him for life. Hiro aims to have the same impact on his players, offering guidance that extends beyond the game.
For Hiro, success in youth sports is not about winning games or collecting trophies. It’s about preparing children for life beyond the field. His proudest moments come from seeing his players demonstrate sportsmanship and resilience, rather than just athletic performance. Hiro's journey with PCA has reinforced his belief that teaching life lessons and fostering a love for the game can coexist with competitive success, inspiring others to recognize the profound impact a coach can have on a child's life.

CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Chicago Public Schools, including the Chicago Public League (High Schools) and Chicago SCORE! (Elementary Schools), enters its 5th year in partnership with PCA, during which over 4,000 coaches and 60,000 student-athletes have been impacted by the training provided.
Coaches in 2023-24 attended in-person workshops at Chicago's Malcolm X College, supported by former professional athletes and PCA supporters Curtis Granderson and Tim Hardaway Sr., both of whom began their athletic careers in the city. Granderson joined the Fall coaches and Hardaway accompanied the Winter coaches for a 1-on-1 discussion about the positive impact coaches have had on their lives, and how their abilities were molded in the Chicago Public League.
PCA also piloted its Character & Leadership Development program for athletes at four area high schools: Lane Tech, Lindblom Math and Science Academy, Von Steuben and Kennedy High Schools. Each of these schools sent 30-40 student-athlete leaders to four separate sessions with PCA, focused on honing their leadership skills on and off the field, and exploring topics like positive initiation, hazing and bullying, mental wellness, and valuable and appropriate social media use. This program will expand to four additional schools in 2024-25, and the hope is to bring participating students together for a culminating event in Spring 2025.
Looking ahead, we hope to incorporate PCA’s Community Impact work starting in 2025.
DOVE'S BODY CONFIDENT SPORT
PCA is proud to join the Body Confident Sport program in partnership with Dove. Together, we will help girls build body confidence and make sport a place where all girls feel like they belong. The Body Confident Sport program provides coaches with the materials they need to increase girls’ body confidence, body image, and self-esteem through sport.
US SOCCER FEDERATION
PCA’s partnership with US Soccer Federation, the governing body for one of the country’s largest sports, led to a collaboration to develop a new online training course, Positive Soccer Environments, that provides coaches, referees, team administrators, parents, and other leaders across the soccer landscape with standardized education on identifying a positive soccer environment and the benefits of creating a positive setting. The course provides tangible tools that leaders and coaches can use to nurture and maintain a healthy team environment for its players. Since its beta launch in May 2024, over 60,000 coaches have already completed the training.
